Such people might feel pity for him but they couldnвЂ™t bear to see his ugly face.Д®ven Persian DarogaвЂ“ the only character in the novel who knew Erik from his early days and who had once even saved his life вЂ“ talked about him in a voice filled with both pity and fear.Д®rik, while presenting himself as the Angel of Music once took Christine to his den in the depths of the opera. Erik, however, managed to befriend Christine by using his great musical skills.Д«ut those who truly knew Erik were horrified. The phantom, Erik, fell in love with the beautiful opera singer, Christine, who in turn loved Raoul. His weakness was his heart which was still capable of love, a heart that was nurturing tender emotions in its secret recesses. This evil, murderous and criminal minded specter, however, had a weakness вЂ“ a weakness that he was himself unaware of. But now he dwelt in the cellars of the huge opera house. He was a highly skilled and intelligent craftsman and a musical genius who had served in the courts of Ottoman and Iranian kings and royalties and had made for them contraptions that no one had ever thought about. He was a great trickster who extorted great amounts of money from the opera management by passing himself off as a supernatural being. This вЂњghostвЂќ was made of flesh and blood. These were the words with which Christine Daae, the heroine of Gaston LerouxвЂ™s novel The Phantom of the Opera, described the horrible opera ghost to her lover and childhood friend, Raoul.Д«ut was the apparition with a deathвЂ™s-head that dwelt in the cellar of the 1909 novelвЂ™s Paris Opera House and had the power to appear and disappear from any place in a matter of seconds even a ghost? вЂњHe had a heart that could have held the entire empire of the world and, in the end, he had to content himself with a cellar. But he was too ugly! And he had to hide his genius or use it to play tricks with, when, with an ordinary face, he would have been one of the most distinguished of mankind! At the same time, Erik shows courage in his struggle to redeem his soul from isolation.вЂњPoor, unhappy Erik! Shall we pity him? Shall we curse him? He asked only to be 'someone,' like everybody else. Near the end of the story Christine displays courage when she saves Raoul and the Persian through her agreement to marry Erik. Raoul bravely attempts to rescue Christine when he learns of her abduction by Erik. The story teaches that finding courage in the face of adversity is an important human attribute. He knows Christine does not really love him, despite his feelings for her, and allows her to leave. Erik comes to realize that he, too, is willing to sacrifice in the name of love. Despite the fact that she has aversion toward the Phantom, she kisses him to show her commitment. Sacrifice is a key moral teaching in 'the Phantom of the Opera.' For example, when Christine realizes that here beloved, Raoul, has become trapped in Erik's torture chamber, she agrees to marry him on the condition that he will release Raoul. Later in the story Christine learns to value Erik as a person. An example is the character of Madame Giry, who refuses to mistreat the Phantom and instead befriends him. Some of the characters come to recognize this fact and sympathize with his plight. Although Erik has a facial deformity that caused him to be cast out by his parents, he is a highly intelligent and highly emotional being. The 'Phantom of the Opera' encourages people to refrain from judging others based on their appearance. For example, he says: 'Know that I am built up of death from head to foot and that this is a corpse that loves you and adores you and will never, never leave you!' Erik's form of love is contrasted with the mutually reciprocated love between Christine and Raoul. These two concepts meet in the form of Erik (the Phantom), who has a fierce, one-sided and possessive love for Christine. It also highlights the need for every human to be loved. One of the main moral teachings of the story is that love between two people cannot be forced.
